Welcome to UnitedMINDs

The mental health support group for employees of the London Fire Brigade.

About us.

Members.

UnitedMINDs is run by employees of the LFB, for employees of the LFB. We are from all areas and all levels of the organisation, working to improve or support mental health in the workplace.

Where we fit.

UnitedMINDs is just one of several equality support groups helping to make the LFB a diverse and inclusive employer as part of their Togetherness Strategy

What we do.

UnitedMINDs has been set up to offer peer support to those in the organisation impacted by poor mental health; either personally or through supporting someone else.

How we do it.

By increasing awareness, and through education, we aim to break down the stigma attached to poor mental health and signpost to organisations that can assist. These include the LFB's in house Counselling and Trauma Services, the Firefighters Charity, Mind and many others.

What is mental health?

"Good mental health is related to mental and psychological well-being. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.."

When we hear about mental health, we often think of mental illness or conditions like anxiety and depression. But, we all have mental health, and just like your physical health, sometimes you are well, other times not so much.

Moving backwards and forwards along a scale from healthy to ill is often called the mental health continuum. However, even when you are ill, it is possible to recover or live a fulfilled life.

Delphis provide an excellent explanation of this model here.

Wellbeing is the sense and feeling of healthy and happy. Your overall wellbeing will comprise of several components, including mental wellbeing (mental health), physical wellbeing (physical health) and social wellbeing (relationships, friends and personal values and beliefs). Something that adversely affects one area may also have a negative effect on the others.

Resilience is the ability that allows some people to bounce back from the adversities of life. Rather than letting difficulties, traumatic events, or failure wear them down, resilient people find a way to change course, emotionally heal, and continue moving toward their goals.
